Sophia Süßmilch – Pure Artist Talk

It only needs a fraction of a second and I’m captivated. What a weird photo! The adjoining, relevant, short and snappy profile in the June edition ofart Magazinunder the promising headline “Die Superheldin”1 clinched it for me. Sophia Süßmilch fascinates me immediately. The same day I write her a mail and enquire about a visit to her studio. She promptly replies. It was to become a special encounter ...

Philipp Humm – Faust as Gesamtkunstwerk of the 21st century?

London, film premiere of The Last Faust. Both the trailer and even just a brief look at Philipp Humm's Gesamtkunstwerk*, his total work of art (graphics, photography, oil painting and sculpture) which now comprises one hundred and fifty works, astonished me beyond belief. Yet what I see today in the cinema hall and will see in his studio tomorrow is absolutely beyond my expectations. A fascinating mix of surreal, bizarre, comical yet also oppressively visionary images draws me directly into a cinematic future of the world. A world, where artificial intelligence has taken control over planet Earth ...

Zander Blom – The Bad Reviews
Sonntag, 24 November 2019

Cape Town. If this is not a true artist studio again! Works on paper drying on a washing line strung across the room, large-format canvases, side by side, waiting to be finished, piles of books, paint tins and endless numbers of crayons competing for floor space, while sketches, printouts and pages torn from magazines cover the tables. I am in the studio of Zander Blom, whose wild and explosive painting, at first glance, appears to be as naively playful as this room ...

Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg. Oderberger Straße municipal swimming pool. This is the place where Johanna Keimeyer staged her spectacular dance performance, much talked about in the media, for the reopening of the renovated building. It is also the location where photographs of her series Pool Around, are installed throughout the entire complex. Here we start our tour through Berlin, a tour through the artist’s multimedia work . . .

Eva und Adele – A total artwork from the future

Who hasn't seen them anywhere before? Their appearance simply attracts everyone's attention. Always dressed identically in bright, ladylike costumes, heavily made-up and with shaved heads, they usually only advance a few metres during their visits to the art fairs and events all over the world. All the time someone asks them for a photo. Since nearly 30 years you almost never hear them say "no". EVA & ADELE pose and smile - and that all the time. The smile is an essential component of their performance FUTURING, which dissolves any border between public and private. Only a few people know that this performance is accompanied by an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, films and costumes and is represented in well-known museums and collections all over the world. The exhibition L'AMOUR DU RISQUE at me Collectors Room Berlin deals retrospectively with their complete work. An opportunity for me to meet them there ...

Jürgen Klauke – From an observer to someone being affected or – What does my taste in art reveal about myself?

Cologne, 15th March 2018. A former warehouse painted with graffiti. How fitting is what I think when arriving. This is exactly how I imagined Jürgen Klauke's studio. The building is as unconventional as his art. He has been setting standards in the development of conceptual photography, body art and performance since the late 1960s. His oeuvre also includes an impressive collection of drawings. The series DR. MÜLLERS SEX-SHOP ODER SO STELL’ ICH MIR DIE LIEBE VOR gave me an initial impulse to examine his work.
I have hardly ever experienced such discussions on art. Reactions varying from attraction to repulsion to shaking one's head or commenting "Oh! It's pretty weird. He must have taken a lot of drugs" to questioning whether I would hang up something like that at home.

Manuel Graf – In the footsteps of animation
Sonntag, 25 Februar 2018

Düsseldorf, 30 January, 2018. My studio visit today gives me access to a very special area of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. It is the top floor of the former Reuterkaserne, equipped with a high-quality render farm. I have an appointment with Manuel Graf, who lectures here and also develops his own cinematic and graphic works. Graf, who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy himself, now exhibits in national and international exhibitions in various group as well as solo exhibitions, and has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships. His works move between sculpture, painting and film, but are more vividly described with the term animation art, as I'll explain later.
I enter a huge space that seems more like a research facility for new IT systems, than a place for creating art. So this is what a studio for virtual art looks like, I assert, disenchanted. The fact that this is a computer network for generating 3-D computer graphics and computer animations is only recognisable by looking at one of the screens. After sitting down at the high-tech equipped desk of Manuel Graf, I carefully approach this unfamiliar topic.
