Human Trans_Mission. Sophie Ramirez (SOFF) on the trail of the “absurd phenomenon of being human”.

Loud and trendy, or futuristic and downright cosmic, Sophie Ramirez alias SOFF poses on the photos of her brightly coloured Instagram-Feeds. When meeting the student of Kunstakademie Düsseldorf privately, you get a surprise. Her extraordinary styling is not just a means of her staging, but an expression of her personality. Make-up, clothing – everything is loud, stands out from what is usually described as "normal". SOFF lives this style. Bold, and impressively self-confident! But, what exactly is her art? Doesn't SOFF fall into the rather more superficial category of pop culture or, is she simply a good model?
I wanted to find out and go and visit her in her live-in studio ... (to read more, tap on photo)

Wilko Austermann – Focus on the curator, Episode 3 of the series “Behind the Arts”
Dienstag, 12 April 2022

Anybody travelling in the Rhineland and visiting the Upcoming artists exhibitions, is very likely to have come across his name. Whether the Antichambre in the Hotel Friends in Düsseldorf, Malkastenpark, MMIII Kunstverein Mönchengladbach, Quartier am Hafen Köln or Krefeld Kunstverein, you will find: Curated by Wilko Austermann. What exactly does a curator do? Or, to put it more accurately: How does Wilko Austermann personally define his responsibilities? We meet at MMIII Kunstverein Mönchengladbach, where he uses the example of Yoana Tuzharova's Plasma soil exhibition, that he conceptualised, to talk about his main ideas. It becomes immediately obvious, that here we have a classic case of being able to differentiate between profession and vocation.

Ardan Özmenoglu – All wonderful

It is indeed absolutely wonderful to stand in front of Ardan Özmenoglu's front door in Istanbul. Surreal is perhaps even better. Just three weeks ago, she spontaneously invited me to her studio at her exhibition opening with the above title at Galerie Anna Laudel in Düsseldorf. And now I'm here. Am I even right? In a mix of English and sign language, I had communicated with the taxi driver and now hope that he hasn’t left me somewhere in the middle of nowhere. The bell sign "hello I'm art" is already reassuring. Address seems to be correct. But unfortunately, no one opens. The tension rises again ...

Close-up and total_Katharina Sieverding

Düsseldorf-Pempelfort, February 26, 2018. I have an appointment with Katharina Sieverding today in her showroom, which is located not far from her studio in a classic brick building. The building is used as a depot and presentation area for her works as well as a meeting place for her public relations work. We enter the building together, carefully weaving past the work leaning against the wall and then find ourselves in the beautifully designed staircase. Some of her famous self-portraits can be seen here. The showroom itself embodies what Katharina Sieverding describes as room art. The gigantic large formats awaken an effect like a cinematic canvas and almost suck the viewer into them. The subtitles that are typical of cinema are also present here, not underneath, but right in the middle of the picture.
