ART DIALOG

– Magazine for art and communication –

Cape Town. There are academies, galleries, museums, art exhibitions, festivals ... and now also a laboratory to experiment with art. At the initiative of the collector Wendy Fisher and her curator Josh Ginsburg, an innovative institute, the A4 Foundation, came into being in 2017, right in the middle of Cape Town. Here, space – literally and figuratively - was created for the passionate experimentation with art, new forms of art funding and communication of art and, particularly, for trying things out. Today, in our conversation with Josh Ginsburg, we hear some more about it ...
Cape Town. With the opening of the Norval Foundation, another architectural and conceptual highlight for culture buffs was created in Cape Town. The opening of the Zeitz Mocaa Museum as recently as last year drew international attention for the first time to as yet little known African contemporary art. This led to the creation of another space which feels committed to exploring and presenting the African art of the 20th and 21st century ...
Düsseldorf. Visiting art fairs is exciting. At least in the beginning. Then, at some stage, it starts to become tiring because one can feel one's concentration going. Many a good art work is then simply missed, unless .... Stop! Put on the brakes. A work of art or an entire presentation unfold a presence from which one cannot escape. This happened in Vienna, during the presentation of works by Tamara K.E. at last year's viennacontemporary.

Wim Botha – Nothing is as it seems

Cape Town. The Heliostat exhibition at the Norval Foundation had impressed me so much that I wanted to meet the artist personally. Here, Wim Botha's work, which regularly attracts attention also at international exhibitions, was showcased in a huge solo show. I am very excited when I drive to Kommetjie to visit the artist in his studio . . .
Berlin, Jewish Museum. I have an appointment with Mischa Kuball in the Libeskind building, one of THE contemporary architectural icons of Berlin. His light and sound installation res·o·nant, specially created for this location, remarkably illustrates the working method of this conceptual artist, who has been presenting his artistic statements in public and institutional spaces since 1977.

Armin Rohde – Stolen Light

There's a lot going on at Sander I Sohn Gallery in Düsseldorf: TV teams and journalists are holding the door open and passers-by are slowing down to take a closer look at the scene. In fact, it's Armin Rohde, one of Germany’s most famous actors, currently preparing his first exhibition of photography. And to answer the first question immediately: yes, he can take photographs with impressive aesthetics ...
Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg. Oderberger Straße municipal swimming pool. This is the place where Johanna Keimeyer staged her spectacular dance performance, much talked about in the media, for the reopening of the renovated building. It is also the location where photographs of her series Pool Around, are installed throughout the entire complex. Here we start our tour through Berlin, a tour through the artist’s multimedia work . . .
Cologne, September 2018. How magical was the installation of his works at Art Cologne’s this year! I was fascinated by their playfully nostalgic, seemingly light-footed aesthetics; these figures, without exception, had awakened an almost childlike spirit of discovery in me. What was it about the devilish figures of the wall-work, holding the pendulum of the grandfather’s clock, grinning at me so provocatively? The wooden silhouette figures, on closer inspection, turned out to be anything but light-footed. Not only was a hand halted, but also time. A cut made for an end or a new beginning. Such interplay, disclosing profound stories against an apparently harmless backdrop, is typical of Claus Richter's art, as I will experience on my visit to the studio today ...
